Gantt chart
Plan projects on a Gantt chart and a calendar
Every list has a timeline. Drag a bar to move its dates, stretch it to change its length and see which tasks block others. The calendar shows the same tasks by due date.
Does Shaire have a Gantt chart?
Yes. Every list in Shaire has a timeline view, which is a Gantt chart: each task is a bar from its start date to its due date. Drag a bar to move it or drag an edge to change a date, zoom by day, week or month, and see arrows between tasks that block each other. A calendar view shows the same tasks by due date. The timeline shows one list at a time and does not calculate a critical path or baselines. It is included in every plan.
What you can do
Bars you can drag
Drag a bar to move a task, or drag one of its edges to change the start or due date. Press Escape to cancel a move.
Dependencies you can see
Tasks that block other tasks are joined by arrows, so you can see what has to finish first.
Day, week and month zoom
Zoom from days to months, jump back to today, and see weekends shaded when you plan day by day.
Grouped by milestone or sprint
Group the timeline by milestone or sprint and each group shows its own date range above its tasks.
A calendar of due dates
Switch to a month or week calendar and drag a task to another day. Tasks with no due date wait in a side rail.
Sub-tasks under their parent
Sub-tasks sit under their parent task on the timeline and fold away when you do not need them.
Milestones bring their brief to the timeline
A milestone in Shaire has a written brief, its tasks from every list and a count of what is at risk. Group the timeline by milestone and its date range sits above its tasks. The arrows come from the same relations you see in each task's side panel, next to the pages that document it.
A timeline for every list
You do not set up a Gantt chart in Shaire. Every list already has a timeline view next to its list, board and calendar. Give a task a start date and a due date and it becomes a bar. A task with only one date becomes a marker, and a task with no dates keeps its row, so nothing drops out of sight.
Plan by dragging
Drag a bar to move a task and keep its length. Drag the start or the end to change one date. The chart works by day, so the dates you see are the dates the task gets, and Shaire refuses a start date that falls after the due date. Zoom out to months to see a quarter, or in to days to plan a sprint, and use Today to find your place again.
See what depends on what
When one task blocks another, the timeline joins them with an arrow and shows how many dependencies the list has. Open a task to add or remove the relation, and the chart updates. Sub-tasks sit under their parent, so a large piece of work reads as one line until you unfold it.
Group by milestone or sprint
Group the timeline by milestone and each group band shows the milestone’s dates above its tasks. Group it by sprint and you see each sprint’s dates instead. Bars take the colour of their status, so work that is stuck is easy to spot.
The calendar, for due dates
Some weeks you only need to know what is due. The calendar shows the same tasks by due date, month by month or week by week. Drag a task to another day and its dates move with it. Tasks without a due date wait in a side rail, and you can add a task due on any day straight from the grid.
When you need more
The timeline is built for a team planning its own work. If you manage portfolios across many teams, a tool built for that will serve you better. Asana is one, and our comparison with Asana covers the trade.
Limits to know about
One list at a time
The timeline shows a single list. Dependencies with tasks in another list are not drawn, and there is no view across projects.
No critical path or baselines
Shaire does not calculate a critical path, slack or baselines, and it does not level resources across people.
No automatic rescheduling
Moving a task does not move the tasks that depend on it. Dependencies come from task relations and cannot be drawn on the chart.
Days, not hours
Tasks are scheduled by day. There are no times of day, and the calendar does not sync with Google Calendar or Outlook.
Up to 200 tasks per view
A timeline shows up to 200 tasks from a list, so a very large list needs a filter first.
Common questions
Is the timeline a real Gantt chart?
It shows each task as a bar from its start to its due date, with dependency arrows and zoom by day, week or month. It does not calculate a critical path or baselines, so it suits a team planning its own work more than a large programme.
How do I add a dependency?
Open a task and link it to another task with blocks or blocked by. The timeline draws the arrow for you. You cannot draw arrows directly on the chart.
What happens to tasks without dates?
On the timeline they keep a row labelled No dates, so nothing drops out of sight. On the calendar, tasks without a due date wait in the unscheduled rail.
Can I see several projects on one timeline?
No. Each list has its own timeline. To follow a goal that spans several lists, open its milestone, which lists the tasks from every list together with the brief.
