Is Shaire a good alternative to Linear?

Shaire is a good alternative to Linear if you want issue tracking and documentation in one product rather than two. Linear Basic is $10 per user per month billed yearly, so $100 for ten people and no wiki; Shaire is €20 a month for the whole workspace at that size, with a block editor and a page tree in the same product. Linear is built to be driven from the keyboard and adds a triage queue, SSO and a mobile app.

What Linear does well

Speed and polish

Linear is designed for speed. Views open instantly, and single-key shortcuts reach every part of the interface. Teams that work through many issues a day move quickly in it.

A developer ecosystem

Linear offers single sign-on, a mature API, a Slack integration and native mobile apps. It fits into a larger company stack.

A triage queue

Incoming work in Linear lands in a dedicated queue. Someone accepts or declines each item before it reaches the backlog.

What Shaire does well

Work lives inside your documents

A page in Shaire holds a live filtered task list. You promote a checklist item into a task, and the task links back to the line it came from. The spec and the work stay together.

Realtime collaborative editing

Two people can type in the same page at once. Presence avatars show who else is on a list, a task or a page.

One price for the whole team

Linear Basic is $10 per user per month. Ten people is $100 a month for the tracker, before a wiki. Shaire is €20 a month for the whole workspace, at three people or at ten.

Linear is a fast, well-made issue tracker with a clear point of view. It is designed for tracking work, and its documents sit next to projects and issues.

Shaire is for teams of five to twenty-five people who want the tracker and the team wiki in one product.

One product instead of two

Teams that want a wiki beside Linear usually add a second product, such as Notion or Confluence. That means two subscriptions, two search boxes and two permission models, joined by links pasted into issues.

Linear Basic is $10 per user per month billed yearly. That is $100 a month for ten people, for the tracker. Shaire includes the tracker and the documentation for a flat €20 a month for the whole workspace. You can invite a freelancer or a designer who only needs to follow along, and the price stays the same.

Tasks and documents on the same page

In Shaire, you embed a live task list in a technical spec, and it updates as the work moves. You write a milestone brief, and its tasks appear underneath. You turn a checklist item in a meeting note into a task, and the task links back to the line it came from.

Two people can type in the same page at once. Presence avatars show who else is on a list, a task or a page.

Six statuses exist the moment a workspace does. Workflow rules and custom fields are there when you want them, and nothing has to be set up before work starts.

Closing a workspace

An owner can end a workspace from the settings screen. On day zero, Shaire cancels your Stripe subscription, removes its webhooks from your git provider and hides the workspace. On day thirty, the data is destroyed. Until then, the workspace can be recovered.

How to choose

Choose Linear if

  • You need single sign-on, a native mobile app or a Slack integration.
  • You handle a high volume of inbound requests and want an accept-or-decline triage step.
  • You already use a separate wiki and want to keep it.

Choose Shaire if

  • You want your specs and the tasks they describe in the same place.
  • You want to write together in real time and track the work in the same product.
  • You want to invite a contractor or a client without adding a seat to the bill.

Common questions

How is Shaire different from Linear?

Linear is a dedicated issue tracker. Shaire is a project tracker and a documentation tool built as one product, with one search and one permission model. Linear goes further on keyboard speed and integrations. Shaire connects the writing to the work.

Can I move my Linear workspace across automatically?

Shaire has no importer, so work from Linear or any other tool is moved by hand. For ten people with a few hundred open items, that takes about an afternoon.

What does a team of ten people cost?

Linear Basic is $10 per user per month billed yearly. That is $100 a month for ten people, for the tracker. Shaire is €20 a month for the whole workspace, at three people or at ten. The eleventh person moves the bill to €59.

What happens if we decide to leave Shaire?

An owner can close a workspace from the settings screen. On day zero, Shaire cancels your Stripe subscription, removes its webhooks from your git provider and hides the workspace. On day thirty, it destroys the data. You do not have to contact support.
